It's Out There

The murder of Deputy Kyle Dinkheller occurred back in 1998. If you're a cop, you've seen this video before, and probably more than once. When I first saw it, I was in the police academy. The audio alone scared me enough that I actually considered quitting. I offer it now as a reminder that these kinds of predators are still out there - more now than ever. We never know what we're walking into.

On the positive side, the murderer, Andrew Brannan, was finally executed this year. Rot in hell, you asshole.

I had never heard this story or seen this video. Thank you so much for sharing for everything you do to protect the citizens. It's videos like this that remind me what a risk you take each day.

Thank you again---

I wish I had been at the police academy when this video was shown because I have a lot of questions:
Why confront an obvious lunatic who has an M1 carbine when all you have is a pop gun and a baton?
Why not get in your cruiser (either when you realize the guy is loony or when he gets the gun out) and back out of there? You have his license. Wait until your backup arrives to go looking for him. Why continue to scream at him pointlessly when it's clear he's not going to comply? Why not leave the scene? Why does a lunatic with serious mental issues have an M1 Carbine? (Never mind. It's Georgia. And the US. Where gun control means normal people jump through hoops but lunatics can have all the weaponry they want.)
I just think that deputy was wrongly trained in how to deal with a loon. Or maybe it's a good thing I'm not a cop, because I would have been out of there (hiding while waiting for my backup) when he started dancing.

I couldn't watch the whole video. Thank you for your service.

That is horrifying. And if the deputy had shot him as he headed back to his truck, the deputy would've been in trouble for shooting him in the back, right?

What was he supposed to do?

I read the deputy was admonished only days (or weeks?) earlier for drawing his weapon on a suspect too soon.

So sad, haunting and frightening.

As the daughter and sister of LEOs, this is the stuff of my nightmares.

Shooting white people in the back is perfectly legal. This man deserved being shot in the back, front, and side. The deputy should have shot him the minute he disobeyed directions and picked up the gun. Unlike Al Sharpton, we know our thugs and when the thugs deserve to die.

I feel a need to burn down a Starbuck's now.

As a matter of fact, Deputy Dinkheller's weapon found it's mark, and the assailant took a GSW to his abdomen if I remember correctly. The killer, Andrew Brannan, was actually in fact a Vietnam Vet who had won a Bronze Star as a forward artillery observer, and apparently suffered from some serious prior mental health issues also, though this was not accepted as mitigation in court. It's a terrifying and very sickening video. The deceased officer was a very young man, and it's actually almost impossible to watch the whole thing. Im surprised its allowed on Youtube. This is an actual death. Whats worse is some of the comments one finds....

I've been thinking about this video since the day you posted it. It scared me so badly I was afraid to go to sleep that night - afraid it would show up in my nightmares. I stayed up 2 hours later than normal, trying to delay the inevitable dreaming.

It still scares me.

I wish I could put this better, more intenesly, but thank you for what you do.
